The Flat Period

Here is my proposal for a new name for Modernism.

The Flat Period. The period when architecture, art and furnishings were flattened out. Additionally, refers to the outmoded belief that the world was flat and if ships sailed out too far they would come to the end of the earth. Modernism arrogantly states that we have reached the limits of culture, so in effect culture can't move forward as it will fall off of the end of the earth.

  1. I don't think I quite get it.. Why is modern flat? One of the shining examples of Modern Architecture is Corbusier's (often called one of the fathers of modernism) Chapel Ronchamp, and it is anything but flat (including ugly as sin...). There were a number of architects and artists during the Modern movement that did nothing remotely "flat," yet they're work is most definitely Modern. Secondly, I don't think I'm understanding your allusion to the end of the earth ideology either. You stated your reference clearly enough, however it was the 1400's when people believed the world was flat, not the early 20th century, and I'm having trouble understanding the connection...

  2. alison is saying that the outmoded belief that the world is flat is analogous to the outmoded(and "modernist") belief that "we have reached the limits of culture"--(that nothing new is possible, evidenced by postmodernism's insistence on pastiche historical reference). chris, I think you might be banned from comments until you post your own idea for a name.
